Romania scrambled fighter jets after a Russian drone breached its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. The incident marks Romania’s response to increasing violations, similar to recent incursions in Poland, where Russian drones were reportedly shot down. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the breach as an escalation of the war, asserting the drone operated within NATO airspace for approximately 50 minutes. The Romanian defense ministry noted that the drone exited back into Ukraine after coming close to interception. Efforts to recover drone fragments were initiated, and NATO plans to bolster defenses in the region. As tensions escalate, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the drone’s incursion, indicating potential implications for NATO’s collective security strategy. Meanwhile, Donald Trump suggested major sanctions against Russia contingent on unified NATO action.
