New York Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor amid a significant surge in his poll numbers, describing him as a leader committed to making New York City safe and affordable. Mamdani, who advocates for progressive policies such as free public transportation and rent freezes, won a convincing primary victory with over 56% support among registered Democrats. Despite his lead in polls, some prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have been slow to endorse him, leading to criticism from fellow party members.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo remains in the race despite losing the primary. Recent polls show Mamdani maintaining a 22-point advantage over Cuomo and other candidates. Notably, former President Donald Trump has weighed in, framing Mamdani’s lead as indicative of voter dissatisfaction (“rebellion against bad candidates”). The general election is scheduled for November 4, 2025.
